My Xmas Present to Myself

Warning: nerdy post if you aren't into photography :)

It seems like every year around this time I get some new photo equipment.  It's mostly because I do a ton of sessions in October & November before the holidays and I save it all up.  This year I was saving for a super wide angle lens.  I was all set on getting the Nikon 10-24mm.  It's an awesome lens and I loved the range it has.  I had looked into the Tokina 11-16mm but, although it gets down to f/2.8, I just felt it didn't have the range I was really wanting.  It seems more of a prime lens.  After looking online and researching it, I was about to purchase it when I decided to call up one of the local photography stores and see if they had it in stock.  When I talked to the guy, he said they didn't but they had a Tamron 10-24mm.  I did a lot of research before and several people on websites declared the Tamron a flop.  But I had borrowed the Tamron before (as well as the Nikon) and I got some really great results with it last year.  If my eye couldn't tell the difference I wondered if most other people really couldn't tell either.  The guy also mentioned that Tamron actually makes this lens for Nikon.  It's practically the same lens with some differences, of course.  The Nikon is definitely more durable, whereas the Tamron is more plasticky.  That didn't really surprise me. Oh and the Nikon says "Nikon" on it.  Yay.

I love Nikon, don't get me wrong.  I think they make the best glass in the industry.  But this time around I decided to go with the third party lens.  For one, it was almost half the price of the Nikon lens.  That alone was enough to seal the deal.  And secondly, I won't be using this lens all the time.  My Nikon 24-70 will still be my lens of choice, I guarantee it.  It's a fantastic lens and usually has the range I'm wanting.  But I really wanted a super wide angle for more dramatic shots.  I plan on using it for architecture, interiors, and perhaps now & then with people.  When I want something different, I'll pull out that lens.  So because of that, I felt like getting the Tamron was a good decision.

This Christmas lights picture was taken last year with the Tamron I borrowed.
